Working with local government

We work in partnership with local governments throughout New Zealand to help improve the flow of information to and from Pacific peoples in their communities, to improve their access to services offered locally and to ensure that they can contribute to regional issues and programmes that affect them. 

To follow are some of the agreements we have with local government, and projects the Ministry works on with them:

Waitakere City Council

The Ministry has an agreement with the Waitakere City Council to develop a Pacific Plan that will identify and build targeted business, cultural and education initiatives for its Pacific communities.

Manukau City Council

The Ministry is working with Manukau City Council to share knowledge and provide advice on Pacific communities in Manukau.

Pacific Youth Financial Literacy Project in Manukau
The City of Manukau Education Trust (COMET) has been working with a number of organisations and representatives of the Pacific community in Manukau to lift the financial literacy levels of the 16-22-year-old age groups.

Auckland City Council

The Ministry is working with the Auckland City Council to develop initiatives that will benefit Pacic peoples in the the city.

Currently, the Ministry has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Council and are holding discussions with them to clarify and develop further action plans.

The Tamaki Transformation Programme

This is a multi-agency programme led by Housing NZ Corporation, to create a mixed income quality urban housing community in the Tamaki area. The Ministry is providing key policy and communications advice on this community renewal programme.

Auckland Regional Policy Statement (ARPS)

The ARPS is the Auckland Regional Council's statement about managing the use, development and protection of the natural and physical resources of the region. The Council is currently reviewing its ARPS.

The Ministry is working with the Council to ensure that the ARPS it develops highlights our aims of improving Pacific people’s economic participation, enhancing their social wellbeing and cultural development in the Auckland region.  Read more about ARPS

Pacific Island Advisory Boards, Committees and Forums in Auckland

These advisory groups play an important part in the affairs and work of the local authorities in the wider Auckland region:

The Royal Commission on Auckland Governance

The Royal Commission on Auckland Governance was established by Government to investigate, and make recommendations on, local and regional government arrangements for the Auckland region in the future.

The Commission has consulted with stakeholders, community organisations and ethnic groups as part of its investigations. The Ministry assisted in the process of consultation between Pacific Island community and members of the Commission. 

Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB)

The overall purpose of the Ministry's Agreement with the CDHB is to promote co-operation and collaboration between the Ministry and the Board to assist in achieving mutually-agreed health outcomes and priorities for  Pacific communities. 

Tasman-Marlborough Region

In Nelson and Marlborough, the Ministry is one of three signatories to a Protocol agreement.  The other two are the Pacific communities in Nelson, and the Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board.

The Ministry works with local government agencies and Pacific community leaders to ensure that planning and delivery of services for Pacific communities includes people from those communities and that mutual interests are achieved through co-operation.

Christchurch City Council (CCC) & Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC)

The Ministry has an agreement with the CCC and CDC. This Protocol records the work we plan to undertake together to improve economic, social and cultural outcomes for Pacific peoples in Christchurch City.   It includes encouraging full participation by Pacific peoples in local initiatives and activities.
