The northern region team in based in Auckland. The office is located in Manukau City and the staff work with Pacific communities to ensure there is awareness of current government policies and programmes.
Our staff engage with the diverse Pacific population in the region, and this allows for community input into government policy as it is developed.
To ensure communications between government and the Pacific community the northern region compiles a weekly email update.
Our weekly newsletter keeps you up to date with what is happening in the Pacific community by listing events, important information and announcements from both central and local government.
Pacific community organisations can also use this newsletter to publicise events. It is distributed to our large and growing database of Pacific people.
The Auckland office works to implement the Auckland Pacific Strategy (PDF) which was developed in late 2009 after extensive discussion with key Pacific leaders.
Five strategic priorities were determined. They are to:
Improve co-ordination
Celebrate Pacific cultures
Strengthen Pacific leadership and influence decision making
Strengthen Pacific economic development
Improve employment opportunities with a focus on Pacific youth
Auckland wants and needs the best strategic minds that Pacific communities have to offer. That’s the foundation of the proposal Ministry Chief Executive Colin Tukuitonga presented to Mayor Len Brown shortly after the election, outlining how best to address and help shape issues relevant to Pacific people in the supercity.
The proposal canvassed the establishment of a Pacific Peoples Advisory Panel, an advisory group with a focus on high level, strategic, region-wide issues. Click here to view the proposal.
