Pacific Community Days

Throughout July, the Ministry will be working with Pacific communities to plan and have Pacific community days. These will be an opportunity for earthquake recovery agencies to network and liaise with the Pacific community. Pacific families will be able to seek answers and information to their earthquake queries, while enjoying a day out for the family with music, entertainment and Pacific food.

Saturday 30 July – Samoa Community Day
Venue – Te Puna Wanaka, CPIT, 4 Coventry Street,Central City, Christchurch

Please note – all Community Days are open for the Pacific community to attend.

Pacific Hub

The Pacific hub is an information and co-ordination centre for Pacific people affected by the earthquake.  It is located at Heartlands Aranui at 45 Hampshire St and is open from 10am – 4pm weekdays.  Staff will ensure that Pacific people receive the relevant support and assistance.

Terisa Tagicakibau and Diane Fenika  from the Ministry are co-ordinating the hub in partnership with ACTIS (Aranui Community Trust), the New Zealand Police, Department of Labour, Housing New Zealand Corporation, Vaka Tautua, Pacific Trust Canterbury, Partnership Health, P.A.C.I.F.I.C.A. and our community volunteers.

Grants

The New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Commission has several grants available to meet the urgent needs of the affected population in Christchurch. Additional grants will be considered as further needs arise in the coming weeks.

Land information

Since the first earthquake struck in September last year, extensive geotechnical work has been undertaken to assess the state of the affected land. While this work is ongoing, information on the state of land, including how badly damaged land is and whether land will be suitable for rebuilding, is now available at www.landcheck.org.nz
